Gr 4-8-These books provide simple explanations with examples of the basic mathematical concepts identified in each title. Chapters are subdivided into sections with bold headings; a one-inch gray band with text devoted to a mathematical definition, explanation, or suggestion appears on the bottom of each page. Examples and problems set off in rectangular boxes resembling spiral notebooks provide visual interest. The authors do a good job of explaining each topic and of giving detailed, grade-appropriate examples. Excellent refresher courses for students who need additional practice.-Linda Wadleigh, Oconee County Middle School, Watkinsville, GA

    Summer 2001 (LIBRARIAN)

These three books (of six in this series) are quite extensive and thorough in the concepts presented. Though most fourth graders will have a working understanding of addition and subtraction, they will be taught to add and subtract decimals, fractions, and percents. The other books also contain some material familiar to fourth graders but not taught extensively at that level. So even ninth grade students can benefit from these books, especially if they need remediation. As explained in the Introductions, these books are designed so that each reader may progress at his or her own rate. The books are easy to read, with one concept explained on each spread. They provide clear explanations for each procedure and explain that sometimes there are different ways to arrive at the correct answer. Numerous examples appear throughout each book and definitions appear at the bottoms of the pages. There is a list of other books to read and Internet addresses that provide tutorial help. Each book has an Index as well. These books will be very helpful to students who might be behind grade level in their math skills by providing another way to present the material. They will also challenge the normal students to stretch and reach beyond the expected curriculum. Some will progress to a point, lay the book aside, and return to it later. In short, these are good math books with several applications.
